Gingham for Spring / Summer

We have all seen gingham, it isn't anything new.  I hardly consider gingham to be a trend. It is a classic pattern that is always in style in some form.  Now that Spring has – finally! – arrived, designers like Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors, have seized upon gingham for Spring 2015 and twisted it into something both daring and sexy.  Gingham isn't a fabric historically associated with particularly avant-garde or boundary-breaking style. What helped to make the trend feel more sophisticated were the ladylike silhouettes, like tailored blouses and blazers, dresses with hourglass shapes, and pencil skirts with up-to-there slits.

What I love about gingham is that it’s super easy to wear. If you’d like to wear the gingham this spring, then here are a couple of my favorite ways to wear the trend:

Checks in black, baby pink, and pale blue, with accents of white, are easily wearable, but if all-over pattern isn't your thing, try a gingham skirt or trousers with a white blouse, or pair a checked button down with your favorite jeans, or try gingham check shirt with white trousers or skirt, paired with sandals.

Try a Big gingham with small gingham mix = chic gingham

Use it as an accent piece. Try a gingham pencil skirt with a vintage tee or chambray shirt for a cool twist on a classic staple.

Gingham accessories are a great way to add punch to your outfit, especially with a bright blue checked clutch or shoe.  Just a pop of gingham goes a long way.

Gingham Tip: Generally a larger sized pattern will make you look larger and can be overwhelming on a small frame.  Smaller patterns are easier on the eyes, combine well with more and are easier to wear on all body types. If the check is small enough it reads as a solid to the eyes.

Spring 2015 Trend: Obi Belts

One of the more surprising trends to come from the Spring 2015 runways? Is the obi belt, or—to use the less official name—karate / judo belts.  A number of designers including Karen Walker, Marni, Alexander Wang, and Tome rocked the obi belt on the runways.  Forget your skinny leather belts or your traditional buckled styles, the obi is feminine, minimal, and actually easy to pull off.

Obi belts = wide strips of cloth wound around the waist, were first worn by Geishas in Japan to call attention to a woman’s curves.  Today obi belts as just as subtly sexy, and an ideal way to shape your silhouette.

Here’s how to wrap yourself up in spring’s newest feminine accessory:

If you want to fake an instant hourglass shape or break up a long torso, wear an obi belt to cinch in your waist and make your figure more shapely.

If you want to look fabulous in an obi belt, it’s important to give it the spotlight. This means no busy prints, big accessories or super-loud colours in the rest of your outfit. By letting your belt be your statement piece, you achieve a pulled-together, chic look with an artsy edge. Remember- less really is more.

Half of the fun of wearing an obi belt is finding the perfect way to tie it. There are dozens of choices. Check out this video to see all the ways to tie an obi belt, and get started on a fab new spring look today. Shop my picks below.

The Timeless Shirtdress trend - Spring/Summer, must haves & street inspiration

Shirt dresses

The best part about styling this classic dress is that it flatters every body type and is effortlessly wearable. Nothing is better than being able to toss on a minimal piece and look put together without a lot of fuss.  The Shirt dress is a must-have piece that you can easily incorporate into your wardrobe for an effortlessly clean and sleek look.  The Shirt Dress is simple, comfortable, and cute and was seen all over the Spring/Summer 2015 runway.

In a nutshell: like a dress. Having said that, it’s the shoes usually which set the tone of the outfit, and perhaps even the shirt’s cut, fabric and design.

The shirt dress comes in different silhouettes like straight A-line bodices, low waists with sleeveless, short sleeve and long sleeve styles and some shirt dresses even include graphics, fabric blocking designs and subtle prints for every style and taste, the options are endless.

The important thing to remember is that the shorter the hem line, the lower your heels should be since the dress naturally elongates your legs.

You can wear it cinged at the waist with a belt (thin belts are always better in my opinion). Or, you can leave it un-belted for a more sophisticated effortless vibe of the whole look.
Tips: roll up your sleeves. Wear thin layered necklaces or a massive bracelet to give it that fashion forward look.  Look for ways to accessorize the blank canvas.
